People of African and Caribbean descent face higher rates of chronic illnesses including heart disease, obesity, type 2 diabetes, and later-stage diagnoses of colorectal cancer. Many of these conditions are influenced by one critical, often overlooked system: the gut microbiome. This vast ecosystem of trillions of microbes, often called the second brain, plays a vital role in digestion, immunity, metabolism, mood, and overall health.
Despite leading global wellness trends, Black communities remain underrepresented in clinical research, with fewer than 5% of global studies including African or diaspora populations.
Western lifestyles and diets have also been shown to reduce the diversity of the African gut microbiome, an emerging factor in chronic disease risk. Meanwhile, most commercial gut tests are built on Western microbiome data and often fail to interpret African-derived results accurately.
